A man getting into the boat near The Relais Henley

Activities and Experiences in and around Henley on Thames.

Discover Henley
The quintessential English market town since the 12th century, Henley-on-Thames grew up as an ideal staging post between London and Oxford. Horse-drawn coaches would regularly make the overnight stop at one of the welcoming inns, while goods and produce could easily be transported and traded along the fast-flowing river. The town has preserved its architectural heritage, including some of its most ancient buildings, and not much has changed since the Victorian era.
Although Charles I stayed at The Relais Henley in 1632 before it was an inn, it was not until 1839 that the town’s rise to global renown began, with the establishment of the Henley Royal Regatta. One of the best-known sporting events in the world, highlight of the English social season, this meeting of elite rowers attracts legendary sportspeople and luminary guests, joining in the party spirit from the flotilla that follows the races.
In all seasons, the riverbank is where life goes on in Henley. You will be drawn by the appeal of romantic boat trips and inviting places to roll out a rug with a good book and a picnic. Local shops, galleries and pubs – festooned in colourful flower baskets for Henley in Bloom – will absorb you for many an hour; and then there are the Chiltern Hills all around, inviting you out for fresh air, country walks and bike trails.
