Steeped in history and strategically positioned, the building has been an integral part of Henley–on–Thames since the mid 16th century, originally designed for accommodation with stables. Part of the west wing adjoining the Grade I listed Chantry House dates back to circa 1460. Medieval beams can still be seen in the Quarterdeck Bar, while the exterior façade reflects its 18th century remodelling. Historically the hotel has been known as The Red Lion, a name which is recorded on the lease of some of the first proprietors in 1732. Of great significance is the painted coat of Royal Arms of King Charles I dated 1632 in room 108 which would have hosted members of the Royal family.

First held in 1839 the Henley Regatta has been held annually ever since.
