Steeped in history and strategically positioned, the building has been an integral part of Henley–on–Thames since the mid 16th century, originally designed for accommodation with stables. Part of the west wing adjoining the Grade I listed Chantry House dates back to circa 1460. Medieval beams can still be seen in the Quarterdeck Bar, while the exterior façade reflects its 18th century remodelling. Of great significance is the painted coat of Royal Arms of King Charles I dated 1632 in room 108 which would have hosted members of the Royal family.

The Henley Royal Regatta is the best-known regatta in the world and is the highlight of the summer sporting calendar and social season. First held in 1839 the Henley Regatta has been held annually ever since. The Relais Henley is perfectly located on the banks of the River Thames with spectacular views over the river and right to the finish line of the Regatta.
